La rentrée 2006 a eu son lot de surprises et de succès. Difficile de tous les couvrir en même temps... mais il n'est jamais trop tard pour souligner une belle sortie, qui se trouve être aussi une superbe histoire.

" Laylow ", premier album de cirKus, n'est certainement pas le fruit de petits débutants ! C'est d'abord une belle histoire d'amour, celle de Burt Ford (producteur légendaire, notamment de Massive Attack, Portishead...) qui offre à sa femme Neneh (Cherry) la chance unique de revenir sur scène sous un nouveau nom. Basta le star-system, retour aux bons vieux beats 90's, à un blues ragga, à des textes langoureux ("You're such an... !' en est un bel exemple), des scratchs et des compos propices à une superbe production électro...

Mais d'où vient ce nouveau souffle alors ? cirKus est à 50% le sang de 2 jeunes venus : Karmil, assistant disciple à qui Ford prête une oreille plus qu'attentive, et une petite nouvelle : LolitaMoon, teenager à la voix cristalline...
Le mélange donne un cirque musical assez impressionnant : très proches de l'univers vocal de Patrice, plus nerveux que les Fat Freddy's Drop, plus taquins et roots que la majorité des artistes d'aujourd'hui, cirKus sort un premier album magistral, peuplé de pépites influencées par le R'nb ("Ruff Turf', "Fools'), le rock ("Fuc all the doh'), la folk, le reggae ("Laylow', "Is what it ios what it is'...) et évidemment le hip-hop/trip-hop.

Deuxième opus de Watch The Men Fall, L'éternité et un jour poursuit le chemin emprunté sur Oktober. Le calme et la mélancolie des compositions, l’acoustique de la batterie et de la basse, le travail intense sur les sons restent autant de marques de fabrique du groupe neuchâtelois. Watch The Men Fall s’est cependant éloigné de la majesté et du froid que dégageait Oktober. Le grain des sons s’est modifié. Plus tourmenté, plus intime et plus chaud, il reflète l’atmosphère des morceaux et les nouvelles voix qui les caresse. À cet égard, à côté des références évidentes qu’étaient jusque-là la new wave et la triphop, Watch the Men Fall s’inspire désormais aussi profondément du côté de la no wave, du postrock et de l’electronica.

Ces réorientations ne sont sans doute pas sans lien avec les changements qu’a connus la configuration du groupe. Jennifer B. (vx) et Manuel T. (key, samples, programming) nous ont quitté pour laisser la place aux nouvelles voix de Gail M. et Daniel E. qui placent Watch the Men Fall dans une dimension plus personnelle. Nicolas M. (dr., samples, programming), Serge R. (key, samples, programming), Thierry S (b) forment le reste du groupe.

Watch the Men Fall, comme l’atteste son nom, est un groupe qui fait du cinéma. Pour témoigner de cet attachement au 7ème art, les sept titres de L’éternité et un jour sont autant de références directes et d’hommages à des films qui ont marqué le groupe. 5x2 de François Ozon, L’éternité et un jour de Theo Angelopoulos, Gattaca d’Andrew Niccol, Taxi Driver de Martin Scorcese, Me, You and Everyone We Know de Miranda July, Gerry de Gus van Sant et Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant de Peter Fassbinder. Il ne faut pas s’y tromper : ce sont les atmosphères qu’on y décèle que Watch the Men Fall a voulu recréer. Les morceaux ne sont pas la figuration des films, mais leur évocation et celui des thèmes qui leur sont chers : la solitude, le décalage, la noirceur, l’humour du monde qui nous entoure et l’incapacité des humains à se comprendre.

Watch the men fall is a trip-hop project (drums, bass, keyboards, samplers/electronics, vocals) which is the convergence of earlier organic and electronic experiences. For over five years now, drawing its inspiration from sources as diverse as new-wave (The Cure), postrock (Sigur Rós) and trip-hop (Portishead), watch the men fall are constantly blurring the frontiers between recorded sequences and live instruments, creating intense and emotional downtempo music. The band combines hip-hop beats, atmospheric synths lines, low hypnotic basslines with the singer's ethereal voice.
After a set of concerts, watch the men fall released their first 4 track CD (October e.p.) in 2003, which was positively reviewed among the alternative music scene. This resulted in more than a hundred airplays and several interviews on national and private Swiss radio stations.
After two important dates in 2004 (Montreux Jazz Festival-off and opening for Mich Gerber), the group decide to focus on the realization of a new full length CD which should be completed in autumn 2006.

Watch The Men Fall, reconquête d'une douleur primitive. Cinq musiciens (batterie, basse, claviers, samplers et chant) qui (se) jouent d'un langage trip-hop (Portishead) ou new-wave (The Cure) pour construire un registre tout d'ombre et de fluidité.

U.K. trip-hop veterans Portishead, in their first American tour since the Clinton administration, slayed the Greek Theater in Berkeley. The group’s first two records Dummy and Portishead are sacrosanct in the ’90s alternative music canon (staffed by vocalist Beth Gibbons, and multi-instrumentalists Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley) and their 2008 comeback performance at Coachella (and attending album Third) is already legendary for its might and majesty. Beyond that, though, there was no tour, U.S. or otherwise until now. After co-curating a few days of the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival, the band’s tour (ending in Denver on the 27th) is incredibly brief and every event is a sold-out testament to the resilience and power of the group.

Their set began with the massive chasm of the Greek Theater aflutter in conversation before the lights suddenly went out and the group (accented in live incarnation by bassist Jim Barr, drummer Clive Deamer, and keyboard player John Baggott) one by one took the stage with Gibbons last, whose arrival was punctuated by the deafening screams of her fervent faithful.

Roiling into the cinematic churn of “Silence,” every line was an occasion for reinvention. Indeed, it’s gratifying to note that their setlist visited all of the familiar peaks of their discography. For a band whose recorded works consisted of three albums over 20 years and one live album, it’s daunting to note their immense influence: from Phantogram to the entire chillwave movement, these guys are legends. And for the next hour and a half, it was exhilarating watching them prove it.

Using the backdrop (but little lighting), the performance was almost confrontational in its intimacy. The band plunged into their second song, “Hunter” which found Gibbons with that wonderful and seasoned instrument of her voice asking “And if I should fall, would you hold me?” Elsewhere, the band aimed for atmosphere and power. A few songs later during “The Rip,” an acoustic swoon gave way to a synth-driven anthem.

Older and beloved material was pretty stripped down: “Wandering Star” found the band at the peak of lounge-rock, with the combined telepathy of the group underscoring Gibbons’ confessions with empathy and solidarity. That said, they knew the strength of attack: “Machine Gun” was as thunderous and jarring as anything I’ve seen at a live show this year. Familiar guitar breaks and band cues elicited screams. It was safe to say that a lot of the group’s California cult was in attendance and the band knew it too.

A lot of the set was built around various material because that’s where their hearts are: on progression and growing. Portishead dipped into ’90s material with “Glory Box” and “Over,” which were every bit as heart-tugging and evocative as you could imagine. After a momentous rendition of “Threads,” the group departed, only to return for a two-song encore that featured a surging take on “We Carry On” highlighted by Gibbons jumping into the photo pit and high-fiving the fans. The joy that was felt by those in attendance was nothing short of contagious, though it’s worth noting that Portishead, an iconoclastic and uncompromising as they’ve always been, can tour at their own convenience. See them if you can. Portishead are back, everybody. Recognize.

It happens sometimes, my dearest readers, that you have to share something very precious, something close to the heart, something that settled in your soul and isn't ever going to leave it. And right now I, feeling like a little kid who is showing off his favorite toy, but sure enough doesn't want to give it to anyone, want to present you with the work of the band Rekevin. The album Nulukatuk came out in 2009 and I truly regret that it took me until now to familiarize myself with the collective's music. I can't and won't criticize it, that's how deeply their music affected me. It also seems pointless to single out certain tracks, in my opinion the record is monolithic and every song deserves attention. I just want to say to All the guys from Rekevin (Ksenia Istenko, Timofey Korshunov, Yakov Krivitsky, Igor Levitsky, Alexey Kochetkov, Igor Bardashev) thank YOU for being there!!!

La scène de musique électronique française, bien que trop peu souvent en tête de gondoles (marketing quand tu nous tiens), voit apparaître de nouveaux artistes aux styles affirmés.
Screenatorium a su sortir et évoluer dans l'ombre de certains de ces ténors parmi lesquels on pourra citer Degiheugi, Ghostown ou encore Berry Weight. Avec son dernier album en date, le groupe commence à sortir de cette ombre et à prendre son envol. Pour preuve nous ne citeront que le featuring avec Doctor Flake ou encore les projets Soundtrack of my Day.

Screenatorium propose ici un hommage à cette scène française mais aussi aux " incontournables ". Les featurings, les samples et l'ambiance en sont la preuve.

C'est par un morceau lugubre que le bal s'ouvre (Gran Theft Audio). L'album se tourne alors progressivement vers l'extérieur. La transition se fait en partie grâce à la voix de Nawelle Saïdi que l'on sent plus ferme et moins hésitante que sur l'album précédent, Take Off for Naive (Flyentist, Undertone Hysteria, Headphones Blues, Raiders of the Lost Art). La présence d'une seconde chanteuse, Astrid Van Peeterssen et l'absence de rappeur permettent de donner une ambiance au croisement entre les grands tels qu'Hooverphonics (Who's to Blame), Berry Weight (Our Finest Messes) ou encore Morcheeba (Little M).

Comme dans les albums précédents, les pistes sont rarement surchargées d'instruments : saxophone, piano, scratch par-ci par-là et une légère guitare se suffisent.
Néanmoins, The Great Escape et Undertone Hysteria surprennent de par leurs rythmes saccadés. On pourrait les trouver de trop. Et bien non, ces deux pistes s'intègrent et coulent parfaitement dans nos tympans.

Un album résolument plus downtempo que le précédent, une formation en permanente évolution, un album gratuit d'une rare qualité font de cet album un must à écouter. Ajoutez à cela le deuxième volume de Soundtrack Of My Day (dans un style moins effréné que le premier, mais sur lequel se regroupe toujours pour le plus grand plaisir de nos oreilles du bien beau monde) et vous obtenez un album que seuls les plus fous n'oseront pas écouter.

Sinusoïdal est un duo de Michael Siwak et Adrianna Styrcz. Stylistiquement il bordée d'ondes électroniques océan swing sons rempli la fois lyrique, et parfois voyous chant Ada. Les musiciens sont inspirés par le nu-jazz, trip-hop, ambient, downtempo et synth-pop. Pour les fans impatients seront échantillons de leur capacité à EP, qui va frapper les magasins à la fin de Juin. Pour un album longue durée à attendre jusqu'à Septembre 2011. ENG: Michal Siwak est sinusoïdale et Adrianna Styrcz. Stylistiquement, il est comme un océan de sons électroniques à nouveau réunies chant lyrique, et parfois agressive de Ada. Alchemy is an old branch of nature philosophy and was removed in the 17th/18th century by modern chemistry and pharmacology. Often in alchemy the only aim was seen the "production" of gold. However, the Alchemists search was even more. They were artists who converted the materials from nature for human applications or for the preservation of human health.

Costa Chrysogelos committed his project „Digital Alkemist“ exactly to this art in musical manner.

To offer raw materials of music in analoge and electronic sounds to the human ear in magic ways. His album "Fuga Magica" is based on a musical composition principle from the middle age. "Fuga Magica" is exactly what the title says. The actual and musical runaway from a dark era through streets and alleys, keys and notes, cables and knobs. A morbid and confused feeling is rising up. A session in a smokey backroom, a performance at the dark theatre, a hangover after a rainy night but also a visit at the vineyard and a walk at Venice beach. All of these, combined with the Magic and the unexpected that life itself contains in his stories day in and day out – this is what “Fuga Magica” is meant to be and represents. The artist Costas Chrysogelos a.k.a Digital Alkemist has recorded this album in Athens and partially in Miami from October 2008 to February 2010. He creates an album without repeating himself in sounds and melodies.

Igor Pudio est l'un des membres du duo polonais Skalpel, responsable de deux albums de référence dans les années 2000 chez Ninja Tune (« Skalpel » en 2004 et « Konfusion » en 2005). Cette fois c'est en solo et sous le pseudonyme d'Igor Boxx qu'il nous offre, toujours chez Ninja Tune, un album qui exprime sa relation personnelle avec Breslau, sa ville d'origine. Une ville dans laquelle il semble impossible de vivre uniquement dans le présent. Une ville meurtrie par son siège de près de 3 mois en 1945 qui opposa l’Armée rouge à la Wehrmacht, se terminant par une victoire soviétique et la reddition allemande.
Le hip-hop instrumental, jazzy et bruitiste du DJ polonais est une grande réussite sonore à l'image des morceaux aux titres évocateurs « Fear Of A Red Planet » ou encore « Downfall ». Les ambiances de « Breslau », parfois oppressantes, nous plongent littéralement dans cette ville et sa sombre Histoire. C'est ainsi que l'écoute de cet album tourne en une véritable expérience musicale, qui s'avère aussi éprouvante que captivante.

Massive Attack est un groupe britannique originaire de Bristol et précurseur de la musique trip hop. Il se compose à l'origine de Robert Del Naja (3D), Grant Marshall (Daddy G) et Andrew Vowles (Mushroom). Le style du groupe, toujours en avance sur son temps, va évoluer : d'abord proche du hip-hop, du groove voire de la soul, il se rapprochera de la musique électronique à la fin des années 1990.

Le groupe a également eu une grande collaboration avec le musicien Adrian Thaws (Tricky) mais ce dernier quitte le groupe en 1994, après la sortie de l'album Protection. Selon ses dires, il ne se voyait pas faire partie du groupe. En désaccord avec l'évolution du style musical, Mushroom a quitté le groupe à la sortie de l'album Mezzanine, en 1998.

Le groupe a sorti 5 albums, de 1991 à 2010, ainsi que plusieurs albums remix, singles et maxis.
