By Holly Dicker  from http://www.residentadvisor.net

As I found out last November there is far more to Jason Köhnen than crude sarcastic humour and blistering metal-referencing "dance" music. Though Bong-Ra may well be his more familiar alias, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble has been around for just as long. Initially conceived in 2000 with fellow Utrecht School of Arts graduate, Gideon Kiers, as a cinematic compositional project—writing new soundtracks for silent films like Nosferatu and Metropolis—by 2007 TKDE had grown into a seven-piece outfit, complete with live improv sibling The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation. Given away for free via their own digital label, I Forsee the Dark Ahead, If I Stay is an excellent introduction to those yet to discover this exceptional collective.

The album presents a series of tracks recorded from shows over the last five years, doubling as essentially a "best of" and insight into the live TKDE experience. Though piecing together components of previous concept albums, narrative is ultimately embedded in all of TKDE's work, which makes this as much a thematic soundtrack as Here Be Dragons or From the Stairwell. Köhnen admitted to disappearing into a "fantasy world" whenever he writes music—Bong-Ra stuff included—but it's through TKDE where the visual bedrock of his compositions are most potent. Each track alludes to its own melancholic tale, though what that is exactly is for you to decide. Here this is exemplified by the LP's sprawling closer, "The MacGuffin." Clocking in at over 15 minutes it depicts a saga in three parts, of a wandering figure—played by a wailing trumpet—grappling electronic demons across the pitchy moors of drone.

Despite the title, I Forsee the Dark Ahead, If I Stay isn't all bleak and full of dread. For the most part it is lyrical to achingly beautiful. "Black Wings" is jazz-infused post-rock bliss, again softly kissed with electronica to conjure a cross-pollination of say Explosions in The Sky with The Album Leaf—without the twinkles. "Adaptation of the Koto Song" is as upbeat as it gets with woozy keys that lead into a samba-like pattering of drums. Track six is in fact the assemblage of three songs, with "Senki Dala" borrowed from Venetian Snares' renowned Rossz Csillag Alatt Született album—the first time breakcore and classical music collided. And it is exactly this weaving of disparate threads, often in an unexpected and chaotic fashion, that make TKDE so fascinating. Compositions can—and do—traverse through multiple genres, as one would expect from a pooling of such eclectic backgrounds: the polar Bong-Ra and Telcosystems projects of its founders, coupled with free jazz, post-punk, drone, metal, funk, glam rock, and classical influences from its other five members. And yet, somehow, it works.

While TKDE are foremost a band, it's the little FX touches from Kiers and the group's vocalist Charlotte Cegarra that have tipped them into the electronic—albeit fiercely abstracted—arena, though really they are on an entire plane of their own. Take "Lobby," where Cegarra's smoky operatic voice has been synthesised into a ghoulishly plaintive cry that wafts amongst the instrumentation. Moves such as this litter the LP without ever taking away from its "organic" musicianship, nudging it instead into an eerie third dimension that is compellingly self-indulgent. But don't take my word for it; find out for yourself—it's free, what have you to lose?

http://www.silvermania.co.uk

Origine du Groupe : U.K
Style : Trip Hop , Alternative
Sortie : 2002

From http://www.cdbaby.com

Location: "We exist in Cheltenham, England; though we live our lives in our warped imaginations."

Many bands - desperate to give the impression that someone somewhere gives a shit about them - claim to be a hit on the Internet. Silverman have been there and done that. Having charted high and consistently at MP3.com, ClickMusic and Besonic, they also won an audience poll by US portal Streamsearch, being flown to Los Angeles for the award ceremony, then appearing as guests-of-honour at the after-show party at Hugh Hefner's Playboy mansion. With the party sponsored by Viagra, says Silverman's co-founder Martin Williams, "we weren't short of somewhere to hang our coats."

Silverman are two - Martin and singer Anna Dennis - with a touring complement of a further three. Anna has no history in bands. She has, though, spent lonely years writing and trashing songs, finding her own voice. Martin's story is different. As drummer, co-songwriter and acting manager of Nilon Bombers, he has suffered the toilet-tours, and was once named Pick Of The Week in Melody Maker.

When the Bombers split, "savaged by time, stress and fatigue," Martin went looking for a singer and, pointed in her direction by "a completely inappropriate rock guy," discovered Anna in an acoustic club. Initial demos were a joy. Previously compromised by the band situation and stifled as a songwriter, Martin was drunk on liberty. Absolutely inexperienced, Anna had no idea what a boundary was. She introduced him to Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco and Heather Nova, he drew her into Mogwai, Sparklehorse and Arab Strap, "stuff that gives you somewhere to explore, where not everything is at the surface."

As the short-sighted industry infatuation with manufactured pop drove listeners into the arms of David Gray, Coldplay, Turin Brakes and Starsailor, so Silverman benefited too. Their wares sold well in cyberspace, so well that time constraints eventually forced them down the more traditional route. Their new album, Speed Of Life Part 2, will - shock, horror - be available in shops. Speed Of Life Part 1, a compilation of all their Internet hits, may have already passed you by.

So, SOL Part 2 is not strictly speaking a debut and - complex, refined and mature - it doesn't sound like one. Caustic, cruel duet Ctrl Alt Del will remind you of Gainsbourg and Birkin, or Cave and Kylie, with music courtesy of, perhaps, Massive Attack. "Can I have my heart back, please?" has you thinking of a tormented Cocteau Twins, with a broken Anna's sad request buried beneath a wave of brutal electro-noise.Themes include sex, death and lingering pain, though the sex is (tellingly?) not gender-specific.

These are "proper" songs, superbly written, beautifully performed and backed with cultured and soulful soundscapes that place Silverman alongside such contemporary greats as Low, Portishead and Sneaker Pimps. Listen and understand.

By Ben Rayner from http://www.toronto.com

Sissy hails from Toronto and already has one superb album under its belt that received international release on a high-profile U.K. electronic label, yet the mysterious downtempo duo is virtually unknown in its hometown.

To be fair, of course, Sissy is hardly a household name anywhere — which seems a touch unfair, since All Under, its 2006 debut for Global Underground Recordings, was an out-of-the-blue stunner that not nearly enough people got to hear. The stars might be finally be poised to align in David Trusz and Johanne Williams's favour, however, since their excruciatingly long-in-the-making second LP is even stronger. If this one gets out to the right audiencesAll Under, it's going to be very tough to ignore.

Fair warning, though: March of the Humans is even grimmer than its predecessor. Coal-black. Mirthless. All Under wallowed elegantly in loneliness and disenchantment while copping a few choice moves from '90s “trip-hop” but M.O.T.H. is colder, more industrial and far more pessimistic. “It's all a waste/ It's always a waste/ It's all gonna be a waste,” Williams intones in a clenched monotone on “All a Waste.” “Show me something that you've done right now that's worth believing in,” goes the bridge to “Long Distance,” one of two tracks that perversely enlist a children's choir for a breathtakingly bleak chorus. Sissy makes it quite clear where it thinks this march is going.

Between Williams's forlornly beautiful voice and Trusz's arresting production, mind you, a spiral into oblivion has rarely sounded this spectacular. Sissy demonstrated on All Under that it could do dubbed-out wee-hours crooning as well as any of the crews from Bristol whose influences it proudly wore. M.O.T.H., however, brings a harder electro edge and more rousing tempos to the table — “Imminent Rampage” even proffers a mid-album eruption of driving tech-step drum-‘n'-bass — and is a less draining listen because of it. It appears that dancing at the end of the world comes as naturally to Sissy as long, dark nights of the soul. Here, Toronto, is your first great album of 2012.

The resistance against outer forces first collapsed upon creation of the first sound’ Year 2008. The track ’7 seconds’ was created in conjunction with Moonbeam in a moment of clarity, when previous memories were forgotten for a split second and the present was the only conscious thought.

This moment was the test for all and the underlying foundation and beginning of the evolution. The compositions are seeking the deeper meaning of existence. This musical quest resulted in tracks like ‘Storm of Clouds’, ‘We Are In Words’, ‘The Lilt’, and others.’Introspection Attempts’ and ‘Doors Opened Inside’ were the first attempts to discover her inner self. This discovery was the beginning of her artistic compositions, music made with her own hands. Year 2011.

The evolution is now in full effect. The solo project Loolacoma contains elements of trip-hop, experimental, and soul. The album ‘Animam’ keeps the hidden motives of self-expression in balance with natural elements: The human being and music. ‘A whirlwind of extraterrestrial voices has wrapped the cradle and the body

This is the Trip-Hop you all miss so much. Elenika is a bratty daughter of 'Bristol sound', who carries a shiny .45 in her Hello Kitty backpack. She spray-paints her rich-ass Trip-Hop parents' mansion and hangs out with the 'wrong types of people'. She will give you a ride in her limo, but you may end up in a ditch at the end of the night. Her melodies are beautiful, her voice is seductive and her lyrics are filled with sweet violence. You will either love it or hate it, there is no middle ground. And you better love, otherwise she will "kill you with a smile".
