For over 25 years, Michael Rose has been recording and performing his brand of militant, hardcore Jamaican music to the delight of reggae fans around the world. As a solo artist & with Black Uhuru, "Ruff" Rose has achieved great success throughout his career, even as different Jamaican musical styles have phased in and out of popularity. Perhaps the highest profile recognition came in 1984, when Michael Rose and the other Black Uhuru members (Duckie Simpson, Puma Jones, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare) won reggae's first Grammy award for the album, Anthem. With lead singer Michael Rose seemingly at the top of his game, he parted ways with Black Uhuru, with the intention of redefining his musical direction as a solo artist. A slew of solo albums followed. In 2013 Mykal has teamed up with Bay Area producer Siahvash Dowlatshahi to release the EP "Showdown Inna Bloody Town". The album represents new musical directions for Rose, featuring the single "Gunfighter", which has an Ethiopian Jazz flavor in the style of Mulatu Astatke. Other tracks such as "Dutty Road" maintain Rose's classic mash down babylon style. With over 25 years in the music game, Mykal Rose continues to innovate by leading the way in new sounds of Jamaican Roots Music. Source

-------------ENGLISH---------------
'La Danse Du Shadow' marks the beginning of a new series of releases for Grant Phabao and his Paris DJs label, with long-time collaborator & multi-cultural artist GregSky, and his newly-launched Noble Art Records label. Both artists have been producing music together for 15 years already, including a cult album, 'Meet The Joslyns', released on the T.I.M.E.C. label in 2004, and many saxophone featurings on some Grant Phabao tracks.

It was high time those two over-productive Frenchmen started working on a collection of reggae and afrobeat music together, and 'La Danse Du Shadow' is just the first piece of a brand new puzzle, a surprising Roots Reggae number reminiscent of late 70s Serge Gainsbourg's 'Aux Armes et Cætera' cultural blend of French Chanson and Jamaican Reggae - with its deep instrumental dub version, 'Le Dub Du Shadow' , on the b-side for the spiritual souls out there.

The series is also a step forward in a new direction for illustrator Ben Hito, who manages to astonish once again, with even more creative liberty than on the previous artworks he designed for Paris DJs, raising the bar with cherry blossoms and swallows circling a blue-eyed red boxer.

-------------FRENCH---------------

« Africa must be free by 1983 » se veut être un album conscious , aux messages prophétiques («Africa must be free by 1983» ,«day of judgement», «Run revolution a come») emprunts de mysticisme, un appel à l’unité («Why do black man fuss and fight?», le tout, porté par le flow hypnotique et lancinant de Hugh Mundell, alors adolescent. Source

Soul Jazz Records continues to dig deeper into the vaults of the mighty Studio One, the most important record label in the history of Reggae music. Founded by legendary producer Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd and famously dubbed 'the university of Reggae' by Chris Blackwell, Studio One is the Reggae equivalent of Motown - launching and establishing the careers of countless Reggae artists - everyone from Bob Marley to The Skatalites. This new instalment features many classic Studio One cuts alongside a heavy dose of superb rarities and spans all eras - everything from classic ska and rocksteady to the deepest roots, heaviest dub and dancehall roots. As ever the album includes an incredible line-up of only the finest reggae artists - The Skatalites, Freddie McGregor, Alton Ellis, The Gladiators, Johnny Osbourne, Cornell Campbell, Dennis Alcapone, Prince Jazzbo, Lone Ranger - all of whom made their names at Studio One. Studio One Ironsides refers back to a time in the 1960s and 1970s when Clement Dodd was at the height of his powers, releasing so much amazing music that Studio One had to invent new label names to trick radio DJs, wary of playing too much music from the legendary studio, into playing records. These creatively titled new label names included Ironsides, Money Disc, ND Records, BongoMan, Forward and more. Source

Kiddus I pointe du doigt les déséquilibres mondiaux sur « Topsy Turvy Old World » (ndlr : monde sens dessus dessous) qui contraste avec la gaieté de « Tell Me What You Know » et l’optimisme de « Better Will Come ». A découvrir. Source

An influential figure on the Bristol reggae scene since the 1970s, Bunny Marrett has been shamefully neglected on record with just two tracks on the A side of a 1981 Shoc Wave 12” his sole output, although his compositions have fared somewhat better having been recorded and released by both Black Roots and Delroy Ogilvie. Bristol Archive Record's June 18th release of Bunny's 1986 recorded album “I'm Free,” should go some way to making up for that oversight. As a bonus, Bunny is accompanied by legendary Bristol band The Startled Insects and equally legendary local jazz drummer Tony Orrell. Bunny may be a reggae artist, but he is also a jazz lover and with first rate jazz accompaniment, the music they produced is a totally natural fusion of reggae and jazz that more than twenty five years after it was recorded still sounds totally fresh. It's naturalness, it's simplicity and it's beauty make this music timeless and with an appeal far beyond the traditional reggae market. This is joyful music created by musicians who were obviously having fun and that shines through. There is no artifice in this meeting of Jamaica's and the United States' greatest musical gifts, it just works as a perfect blend of styles. Bunny has been singing since his childhood in Montego Bay and after relocating to Kingston was soon entering talent competitions. Moving to England whilst still in his teens, Bunny continued to sing as well as becoming involved with sound systems. He also embraced the local jazz scene as well as the diverse music of the West Indies including learning to play Piano with Laurel Aitken. Although his profile outside of Bristol may not have been high, by the time he recorded “I'm Free” he was an experienced writer and performer. When they collaborated with Bunny the, Startled Insects had already made an impact with their first two records on Antenna and were about to be signed by Island. One of the Startled Insects, Richard Lewis, will be well known to fans of Bristol Archive Records as legendary engineer and producer UK Scientist. The remaining band members known as just the Insects, would go on to a very successful career scoring music for film and television, writing for Massive Attack and working with several leading UK acts. Drummer Tony Orrell is something of a legend in Bristol music circles. In fact, having played with Spirit Level, Sphere, Andy Sheppard and Adrian Utley to name just a few, he's a hugely respected musician on the UK jazz scene and has often utilised his talents for non jazz artists. The vinyl LP contains the 1986 album as it was envisioned, four vocals, the uplifting title track “I'm Free”, Bunny's tribute to Bob Marley with “Jazzy Reggae” making an excellent adaptation of the Wailers original. “Farm Diggin'” inspired by life in rural Jamaica and “Natural Princess” a pure love song, “Jazzy Reggae and “Farm Digging” are accompanied by their versions/dubs. For the CD issue we have added “Times Are Getting Harder” and “Hard Times (dub)” both tracks from Bunny's Shoc Wave 12”. Source

Brina is a new voice of World Roots Reggae Music from Jamaica, an artiste steeped in the sounds and rhythms of her Jamaican culture. With the release of this incredible debut album “Under One Sun”, Brina is ready to share her music with the world. Under One Sun features Jamaican legends Toots Hibbert (of Toots and the Maytals) guest vocals, and Sly Dunbar (of Sly and Robbie) on Drums. The quality of the songs and music, combined with Brina’s talent and sincerity drew many great musicians, eager to be part of this album. The seeds for Under One Sun were planted in 2007 when Brina met Kieran C Murray, a Scottish musician living in Jamaica. This meeting of minds and cultures sparked a flow of creativity and they began writing songs together. It was now time for Brina to record her debut album, truly representing the talent and creativity that exists in Jamaica. Descended from The Maroons, Brina’s deep connection with drums and African music is as natural as her vocal expressions of freedom and justice. Her desire is to fuse together elements of her rich cultural and musical heritage using Reggae, Nyabinghi and other musical styles from the African diaspora; singing of justice, equality, liberation, oneness and love. Brina's songs bring a positive healing message to the world. Using driftwood from the Caribbean, Kieran and Brina built a small Tribal Global Studio in their cottage in Stony Hill on the mountains above Kingston, here the recording and production of the album began. This was in 2009. They tracked live drums and bass at Bob Marley’s world famous Tuff Gong recording studio, drums with Sly Dunbar at Anchor Studios and Grafton Studio for the live horn sessions. Memorable vocal sessions were recorded in Jamaica’s mystical Blue Mountains. Some drum and guitar sessions were recorded in Columbia and California through the internet, lending a truly global dimension to the project. Between hurricanes, tropical storms and loud street sound systems the rest of the album was tracked in the Tribal Global Studio. Recording was completed in the summer of 2010, final mixing and mastering completed in 2011. The full album credits read like a who’s who of some of Jamaica’s finest musicians including: Sly Dunbar on drums, Jubba White, Jallanzo, and Luke Dixon of Dubtonic Kru on drums, guitar and keyboards respectively.
