A Third in a series of five free EPs collecting the best reggae reworks from the Paris DJs Virtual Releases podcast in high-quality audio, entirely produced, mixed and newly remastered by French superproducer Grant Phabao, 'Dynamite B-Boys' gathers four reworks of monumental American Hip Hop artists Lyrics Born, Jurassic 5, Big Daddy Kane and The Procussions. Those four reggae reworks have generated nearly 50.000 downloads in 128k MP3 through Paris DJs' podcast of free tracks.

Reggae has been at the ‘fore-front’ of the development of music. It has influenced disco, pop, and ska. In today’s uprise of hip-hop we must give credit to Reggae and the Jamaican culture from which it came from. Reggae’s discovery of dubbing and toasting led to hip-hop’s emceeing (later known as rapping) and scratching. A variety of techniques would develop from this, one being sampling. The sound systems of Jamaica became the center of American inner city night-life.
(Reggae’s Impact on Hip-Hop - Jamie Ann Board, 2000)

No-one today can dispute that reggae was the most influential figure in the development of hip-hop, that reggae music gave America the technology to create hip-hop. Now Grant Phabao, one of the very rare few producers today to bring back the real roots reggae sound without dripping it with variety songs chords and sound gimmicks, is paying tribute to those origins, taking classic hip hop a cappellas and dressing them with elastic, dynamic reggae grooves, taking the present back into the past with a blast!

The heat starts with some Berkeley hip hop from Lyrics Born (formerly Asia Born), a Japanese-Italian/Jewish-American rapper and producer, half of the group Latyrx with Lateef the Truthspeaker. Reworked into a bouncy reggae tune, all party-style with its rolling drum breaks and hookish chorus-like lyrics all along, 'I Like It, I Love It' becomes a certified floor filler - tested and approved by fellow DJ Erik Rug at is famous WaxGroove nights.

We then head out in L.A. with another heavyweight goodie which sees the french dubmeister practicing his chops with a Jurassic 5 a cappella taken from their 2006 album 'Feedback', dressed with bubbling dub sounds, chugging reggae beats and soulful horn riffs. A perfect mixture of deep and funky, for heavy lounging! Jurassic 5 is an American alternative hip hop group formed in 1993 by rappers Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir, Marc 7, with DJs Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist. The group broke up in 2007, and refomed in 2013 for an international tour which might lead to the release of a live album…

Also coming from the L.A. area is the Connie Price & the Keystones project, involving Dan Ubick (Breakestra, Madlib's Sound Directions) and Paris DJs collaborator Todd Simon (trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and performer featured with Breakestra, Macy Gray, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Madlib's Sound Directions, The Lions, Quantic, Clutchy Hopkins, Ohmega Watts, Orgone, Shawn Lee, TV On The Radio, Mayer Hawthorne, MF Doom, Flying Lotus, Jneiro Jarel, Sam Sparro, Quadron, Mulatu Astatke, Nas, Flying Lotus, Ghostface Killah, etc. and more recently Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble, Adrian Younge's Venice Dawn, The Decoders or Kelis to name a few). The Keystones combined elements of soul, afro beat, dub reggae, late ‘60's/early ‘70's film scores, and psychedelic rock & jazz into a soundtrack for the best film you've never seen. After the superb 'Wildflowers' album in 2004, they joined forces with Big Daddy Kane in 2007 for an exclusive 12-inch in the 'Scion A/V' series, revisiting his classic tune 'Give A Demonstration' with new vocals from the smooth operator himself, over some heavy badass funk. Not long after, the a cappella got into Grant Phabao's hands, who taylored-dressed it into the party-skanking reggae smashing hit you can hear on this 3rd EP of reggae reworks… but the story doesn't stop here. Todd Simon happily discovered this rework only a few months ago on youtube, after having collaborated with Paris DJs on a few exclusive mixes and compilations tracks during the last years... and he might soon deliver a remix of this remix, going full circle! 'Fingers crossed' as the saying goes.

Last but not least, and also from California, The Procussions are a top-of-the-notch, funky, old school, with plenty of sunshine socially-conscious L.A. hip hop duo consisting of rapper Mr. J. Medeiros, and rapper/producer Stro Elliot. Disbanding in 2008 to pursue solo efforts, the group reformed in 2012, funding a new recording via crowdfunding and released last year. In the early years of Paris DJs, Grant Phabao got access to an exclusive a cappella of their 'Simple Song' hit-sounding tune, and reworked it with skanking riffs, heavy bass, clavinets chops, echo, reverb and lots of percussion - what is now known as the traditional Phabao style. This is hip hop/reggae mashing-up at his best, still hot nearly a decade later, fully re-mixed and re-mastered as the rest of this series of 'Reggae Reworks'. Another perfect party track you HAVE to download while Paris DJs' stock of bandcamp download codes still lasts!

The Red Star Martyrs return with the 2nd EP on Dubophonic. This time the UK musician and producer Stanley Wood unleashes the herbal energy of tea, brewing some special blends, mixing the finest musical flavours of Europe, Jamaica, Orient and Occident in a tasty and relaxing chill out drink. Alongside with him, many artists from the Dubophonic netlabel family. Ibel, The Dubbstyle, Mr Mefistou and Koncrete Roots prepared their own special recipes and are ready to serve their exclusive versions of Stanley’s riddim. So, sip your cup and let the journey begin.

The EP starts with the taste of mint in our mouth, as the oriental vibes flow inna mystical way in the atmosphere. The river of tranquility passes right in front of us, as we embark in a journey, that sets our mind and soul in a perfect balance. The magical voice of Ibel guides us ina Rub-a-dub journey of irieness, as he prepares his special Jamaican blend of tea, served in two different mixes.

The sounds of the far east travel to Argentina where mint receives a special treatment by the Dubbstyle, being mixed with the yerba mate leaves, only to be transformed into a antioxidant and cholesterol-lowering beverage, cleansing the body from all Babylon diseases. The logical outcome is the cleansing also of the mind and Mr Mefistou uses his double ethnic background and adds for the next recipe a touch of flamenco style guitar mixed with a New York influenced sound.

Finally our herbal beverage returns back to the country it started its journey, only to be chilled in the fridge and to be served with ice by the Koncrete Roots inna special dubplate style. Once we are cleansed, in body and in spirit, we can enjoy the last cup of tea served exactly at five o’clock by Stanley Wood himself. Give thanks for that wonderful journey!

The first Dubkey release for 2014 is a crucial roots/steppers/dub album by UK producer Reuben Addis. A highly respected veteran of the British roots scene, Reuben gives us 10 glorious tracks, ranging from classic one drops to heavy digital steppers.

The main singers on the album are longtime Unitone collaborator Zebby Blax, the Junior Delgado-influenced Hatta Benji, and Reuben's own daughter Dinah. Maltese melodica specialist David Magro (Mind's Eye Dub) appears on the splendid 14-minute-long TROD MOUNT ZION CHANT extravaganza. Another Maltese connection on the album is Manwel Tabone's old Reggae Club Radio Malta show which provides us with 2 exclusive Unitone dub plates from 2003.

Nuff intricate dubscapes spice things up throughout this spiritual offering, the experience enhanced by a mystical ETHIOPIAN DAWN photo by Niall Crotty on the cover.

Second in a series of five free EPs collecting the best reggae reworks from the Paris DJs 'Virtual Releases' podcast in high-quality audio, entirely produced, mixed and newly remastered by French superproducer Grant Phabao, 'The Queen & The Abstract' gathers four reworks of massive Hip Hop artists Erykah Badu and Q-Tip, who don't really need an introduction - at least for our readers/listeners. Those four reggae reworks have generated nearly 100.000 downloads in 128k MP3 through Paris DJs' podcast of free tracks. They marked the beginning of Grant Phabao's international recognition for his remixing skills, starting with Erykah Badu's soul/hip hop classic 'Honey'.

Dressed into an instant reggae soul tune, sounding as if it was an original recorded 40 years ago in Kingston and the 9th Wonder production was the remix, this one was supported by Ali B, Darren Bodytonic, Diesler, Earl Blaize, Erik Rug, Fat City Record Shop, Lawkyz, Mo'Horizons, Nick Record Kicks, Nick V, Oliver Wang, Paul Gamblin, Rob Luis, Ruckus Roboticus, Jon Sheppard, many blogs and many others… A dope & fresh dead-ringer for the sound of seventies Kingston, the sort of thing that causes impromptu bumping and grinding… and a great addition to any DJ set.

And if Q-Tip got the exclusive Grant Phabao treatment twice, Paris DJs didn't want one of the most wonderful American voices of our time to be jealous, hence the second reggae take on an Erykah Badu track, 'Soldier', taken from the 'New AmErykah Part.1' album. Tested & approved by legendary DJ Erik Rug, those rootsy Jamaican vibes with the heavy boombastic production skills from the french dubmeister amount to a dancefloor winner for sure!

Now about the two reworks for the former A Tribe Called Quest member… Q-Tip ranks among the most revered MCs out there. His 2007 single 'Work It Out' reworked by Grant Phabao becomes another instant neo-retro classic, as if recorded decades ago at Studio One in Jamaica, while his follow-up single from 2008, 'Getting Up', gets drenched into deep and skanking reggae territories. The TUNAGE alert rings loud, and soulful digital DJs will be glad to finally be able to grab some high-quality audio versions of those reworks.

As opposed to other reggae remixers operating these days, Grant Phabao doesn't just mash up and old reggae tune with some hip hop vocals. Mashups, also called bootlegs, a blend of two or more pre-recorded songs together, were a big thing more than 10 years ago - but sound really dated today. Phabao only keeps the vocal parts, and builds a brand new riddim over those, from scratch, without keeping any instruments, and most of the time without any trace of the original instrumental parts' melody and rhythm. So that the newly built riddim is a 100% original one. Once again the inna di dub and roots tradition EP is strictly limited to 1000 downloads, so act fast or you'll have to hunt the p2p networks later!

Samson Sounds is an up-coming outfit within the city of Glasgow. Incorporating musical elements from African highlife and blues, to Kwaito and steppas with a heavyweight dub base. The grooves played are tight, solid and never fail to bring warm happy vibes to any event.

A highly diverse group, the use of digital elements, gives them the ability to set up in limited spaces bringing live music to where only DJs have played before. It also allows soundsystem-heavy music to be played live at similar levels to those of a DJ with ease.

Originally started with a soundsystem, DJing and solo productions by Anders Samson the band began in earnest when, King Raja and Willie G joined, bringing trombone and guitar to the table. From here the sound really progressed. Willie’s rapid African plucking and Rajas melodic brass gave a much wider scope for the music pushing the boundaries out from the solely electronic into a fresh blend of live instruments and digital sounds. With the addition of singer Easy Oze in early 2012 the group had reached the fullness of today. Easy Oze’s sweet and sometimes deceptively high voice, cuts a path while also providing deep soul vocals to soothe it back over. This group will always bring style and smiles to any party, regardless of the crowd.

Roger Marsh – Trombone

When the descendants of a deceased musical legend put unreleased recordings of the artist on the market, no eyebrows are raised. We have gotten used to it, and fans will purchase it regardless of the quality. When the debut album of a promising young gun is being released posthumously, it is an entirely different matter.

Matthew McAnuff started to record his album debut in 2009. Advice came from his father, Winston “Electric Dread” McAnuff, who produced much of it. Coming from a musical family - Matthew‘s elder brother Rashaun “Black Kush” is the drummer of Uprising Roots -, the path Matthew chose seemed natural. The accolades he got in 2010 for his Earl “Chinna” Smith-produced single Be Careful confirmed that. The reggae press suddenly saw Matthew McAnuff as Winston‘s most talented son, and as an upcoming star. Two years later, on August 22, 2012, Matthew McAnuff was stabbed to death at the age of 25 in Montego Bay, Jamaica over a ludicrous dispute.

The album that was supposed to start a promising career had become his legacy. Matthew had finished it before his untimely death. Now his father released it on Chapter Two, the successor of the short-lived French label Makasound. The album is named after Matthew McAnuff‘s single that turned out to be terribly premonitory, Be Careful. On board of the project were the Roots Radics with Flabba Holt, Style Scott and Dwight Pickney, plus Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace, Sticky Thompson, and Richie McDonald. Cedric Myton provided some backing vocals. On top of that, Matthew had invited a few friends from France: Fixi, a good friend of Winston McAnuff, plays accordion on the intense Midnight Rolling. Later this year, he‘ll release A New Day, another joint venture album with Winston. Fixi is further listed as an arranger. The brass section on Be Careful features Guillaume “Stepper” Briard, Eric “Rico” Gaultier, and Olivier Caron. Parisian producer Tom Fire is responsible for the mixing.

Be Careful contains thirteen tracks. It‘s pure, vibrant roots reggae, spiced up with a bit of dub. The only exception is Brainwash, the tune Matthew had recorded on a riddim provided by Tom Fire. Musically, this one is outright electro. Its lyrics are as conscious and thoughtful as the rest, though. Rastafari and its topoi are the guideline here. There‘s a bit of lovers in between (Make Up Stories), and a surprising hymn to individuality and mutual respect (A Little Way Different).

Why do the best ones have to die young? Be Careful is Matthew McAnuff‘s testament, and the album is a strong testimonial that we have lost a talent that was so much more than just a one-hit wonder. You won‘t be forgotten, Matthew!
