Bassist and composer Omer Avital assembled an especially intriguing line-up for ASKING NO PERMISSION, a live date recorded at New York City's famed jazz club Small's. The sextet features four saxophonists, creating an expansive, careening sound and plenty of options for soloing. Ironically, Avital's bass is still featured prominently, as is his songwriting (six of the album's seven cuts are his). ASKING NO PERMISSION is entrenched in bop and post-bop idioms, but the sensibility driving it is relentlessly fresh and contemporary.

Debue album from the Canadian songstress. Yanofsky sang Canada's national anthem at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and performed during the closing ceremonies. The debut release from one of the most talked about young vocalists in the country! Ella... Of Thee I Swing, features a DVD and CD capturing the 14 year-old jazz sensation in a sold-out show in Montreal. After four packed concerts at the 2007 Montreal Jazz Festival, Nikki Yanofsky returned, by popular demand, to Place des Arts to reprise her tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, entitled Ella... Of Thee I Swing. This magical night resulted in one of Nikki's most memorable performances. Owning the stage, she captivated her audience like a veteran performer three times her age.

From Wikipedia :

Archie Shepp's Thing Have Got To Change, released in 1971 solidified the saxophonists reputation as a soulful, yet radical free jazz artist motivated by social commentary and cultural change.  The record which features many of Shepp's longtime comrades including Joe Lee Wilson, Beaver Harris, Grechan Moncur III, and Ronald Wilson integrates the symphonic-like structure of the politically charged compositions with the spirited, cathartic sound for which Shepp is so notorious.

"Dr. King, The Peaceful Warrior", a stripped down anthem style duet between Shepp and Cal Massey, provides a striking contrast with the album's predominately thick, almost ecclesiastic orchestration.  Ultimately, Things Have Got To Change is a vivid snapshot of a social conscious artist who not only wore his emotions on his sleeves but expressed them with unsurpassed artistry and prowess.

This set was a change-of-pace for Chico Freeman for it features the usually adventurous tenor (who doubles on soprano) mostly playing warm versions of standards. The CD reissue adds four previously unissued selections (including a pair of Coltrane tunes, "Lonnie's Lament" and "Wise One") to the original program. With pianist John Hicks, bassist Cecil McBee and either Billy Hart or Don Moye on drums offering fine support (vibraphonist Jay Hoggard sits in on "Carnival"), Freeman pushes at but does not break the boundaries of hard bop. Highlights include "Autumn in New York" (a duet with McBee), Horace Silver's "Peace," "It Never Entered My Mind" and the bassist's "Close to You Alone."

A landmark in 70s jazz and Latin -- one of 2 legendary sets cut during the decade by composer/arranger Bobby Vince Paunetto -- easily one of the most unique voices of his generation! Bobby's got an approach to melody that's all tied up in the rhythms -- one that has most of the instruments in the group vamping along with the grooves, while solos take off in wonderful flights that soar to the skies on waves of sound and soul -- echoing a sense of joy and life that few other albums of the period can match, and hitting a groove that's complex, yet instantly moving and deeply personal.

Players include Tom Harrell on trumpet, Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax, Billy Drewes on soprano sax, and Bobby himself on vibes -- sounding wonderful throughout the album, matching the 70s brilliance of Roy Ayers or Bobby Hutcherson! Also features percussion by Manny Oquendo, Jerry Gonzalez, and Milton Cardona -- and titles include "Osiris", "Fenway Funk", "In Time's Time", "Spanish Maiden" and "Brother Will". Essential!
Enjoy it!
