By John Fordham    From http://www.guardian.co.uk

This is bass-guitar star Marcus Miller's UK-tour repertoire of last month, plus a few bonuses, including the finely spun vocals of young New Yorker Gretchen Parlato and the rasping ones of Dr John on two tracks. For jazz-funk fans, it's paradise – Miller's arrangements have the clamouring horn parts, snappy basslines, raw guitar fills and whipcrack backbeats of this style meshing like a racing engine, and, of course, there are plenty of jawdropping bass solos. Creative obliqueness (of the kind Miller brought to Miles Davis's Tutu and Amandla albums in the 1980s) isn't always apparent. The assertive foregrounding of the bass guitar doesn't exactly enhance the potentially mysterious Brazilian feature Setembro, with its vocals by Parlato and Ruben Blades, and horn-punching groovers such as Cee Tee Eye veer to the formulaic. But the exhilaratingly funky Detroit, the lyrical (and Tutu/Amandla-related) Redemption, or the Headhunters-like Slippin' into Darkness confirm Miller's mastery of his particular world. Solos from Lincoln Centre trumpeter Sean Jones and excellent regular saxophonist Alex Han spark fireworks, sly quotes from Dizzy Gillespie and Bob Marley classics add spice, and there's a poetic solo-bass finale on I'll Be There.

By Matt Temple    from http://electricjive.blogspot.fr

Roots were a short-lived band comprising Barney Rachabane (alto), Dennis Mpale (trumpet), Duke Makasi (tenor), Sipho Gumede (bass), Peter Morake (drums) and Jabu Nkosi (organ). Replace Jabu Nkosi with Abdullah Ibrahim, add Basil Coetzee on sax and you have the group that recorded the seminal African Herbs LP under the direction of Abdullah Ibrahim.

Roots are often cited as a key strand in the development of an indigenous afro jazz sound that links the Drive, the Pelican Club house band under Dick Khoza, Spirits Rejoice and later Sakhile. The liner notes (repeated below) make reference to the public performance diffculties of the times, something well noted by David Coplan in "In Township Tonight". There was nowhere left to perform this kind of music in the late seventies.

From the original liner notes: "Within two months of its formation, the group has already got down to composing and recording this LP. Barney Rachabane on the alto and Dennis Mpale the trumpet master are the backbone of Roots. These two have played with the greats, such as Mackay Davashe and Gordon Mfanda who were both nipped in their buds by an untimely death. Duke Makasi plays the tenor sax, Sipho Gumede is on bass, Peter Morake on the drums and Jabu Nkosi on the organ, The group plays Rock Jazz with a local sound. Their music takes one back to Dorkay House jam session days which are now no more. They play in private homes and intend making more recordings."

For a long time no recordings of the Roots were thought to exist but slowly we uncover the past through the artefacts we are fortunate to find. We hope you enjoy today's recovery. Highly recommended.

From Oficial Site :

“ Come on boy, come on girl ” sera, lui, utilisé pour une campagne publicitaire mondiale Peugeot.

Born in New York, Margeaux Lampley grew up in California, raised on gospel, jazz and soul music. After receiving a law degree from Columbia University in New York, she left the US and an international career in law to live the artist’s life in Paris, studying music with an emphasis on jazz at the CIM music school and the Studio des Variétés.
Very quickly, she was invited to collaborate as a singer-songwriter for various French groups including the Marathonians (“Come on girl, come on boy”, signed by Warner and used for a worldwide Peugeot publicity campaign), Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague producer), Bang Bang and Funkaroma before forming the the group Sodex and releasing two singles, which became club hits. Her song “Move Me”, was featured on compilations in France and throughout various parts of the world, as well as on the soundtrack of the film “De battre mon coeur s’est arrêté”.
Margeaux Lampley gravitated towards Jazz naturally. With her warm, intimate style, Margeaux is a regular on the Paris jazz scene, Sunset-Sunside Jazz Club, Petit Journal Montparnasse, and European festivals such as Enghien-les-bains Jazz Festival and is making a name for herself throughout France and Europe. She is accompanied by talented musicians such as pianists Olivier Hutman, Alain Jean-Marie and Manuel Rocheman, double bass players Blaise Chevallier, Michel Rosciglione and Philippe Brassoud, drummers Thierry Chauvet, Olivier Robin and Andy Barron, saxophonist David Sauzay and guitarist Olivier Louvel. In 2008, she proposed a first jazz album Love for Sale, which revisits the great jazz standards.
For her new album Rain, Margeaux delivers 9 original compositions and 3 covers, oscillating between jazz, pop, soul and latin music. Pianist Olivier Hutman, who has already produced albums for singers Anne Ducros, Stephy Haïk, Clotilde Rullaud and Denise King, takes charge of the musical direction, the arrangements and the production of the album. With this second opus, Margeaux Lampley invites us on a cultural voyage.

By NPR Staff  from https://www.npr.org

Back in the 1930s, Boyd Lee Dunlop taught himself to play music on a broken piano left out on the streets of Buffalo, N.Y. Only half the keys worked.

He also taught his little brother Frank to play the drums while they were growing up. Frankie Dunlop went on to record with Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, among other jazz greats. Boyd Lee Dunlop went to work in the steel mills and rail yards of Buffalo, occasionally playing piano at local clubs.

Another chance encounter with a busted piano has now led Boyd Lee Dunlop to record and release his first album, at the age of 85. Brendon Bannon, a documentary photographer by trade, is the album's producer.

"We met when I went into the nursing home where Boyd's living, in Buffalo, to talk to the doctors there about doing a photo project. Boyd was sitting down in the waiting area also, and we struck up a conversation really quickly," Bannon says. "He told me about his piano playing and invited me down to the cafeteria to listen to him play. I looked at the piano, and there were keys broken off of it ... It didn't look well. But Boyd was wrestling some beautiful sounds out of it."

Here, Weekend Edition Saturday host Scott Simon speaks with Bannon and Dunlop about Dunlop's debut album, Boyd's Blues.

" Now I will taste the fall and owe all my love to him". The nature of melancholy is one of beauty, and so is its language. Thus melancholy is my true artistic source. " You can`t force a rose to bloom". The way I see it, patience combined with hard work is the only way to go, and we should feel humble towards the changes cast upon us as we trot along.

From http://jazzalley.blogspot.com

Laila Angell has a close relationship with Edvard Grieg's music. Now she has composed 10 songs, inspired by the Norwegian master's piano pieces. Their debut album, Changes- an organic, acoustic Norwegian jazz albums - represents a new and different elements of Norwegian jazz and popular music.
The lyrics on the CD is the result of a collaboration with author Marit Berger.
Genre-wise are the songs in the landscape melodic jazz / pop with a touch ballad. Artist's distinctive voice enhances the clean melodic lines, the exciting harmonies and lyrical texts. Naked voice with delicate shades of blue. A remarkable debut.
