The fourth and penultimate EP of the S.O.U.N.D. series, initiated by the Dub Addict crew, is finally available. It offers two new Pilah’s compositions : “Crazy Democracy” (and its dub version), highly representative of his both roots and modern dub; and “Dub Card”, made in a more digital style. Joe Pilgrim’s melodically inspired voice (already featured in the “U” EP with Roots Massacre) tremendously leads these tracks, supported by meticulous and unique arrangements, getting free of the traditional dub scene.

Music comes with a lot of different qualities and can appeal to many different parts of the human physicality. Just like sex, it's at its best when it stimulates your loins as well as your brain and affects your heart as well as your soul. And oh yeah, it's the most fun when it goes deep down and dirty.

Since Dub One! has a fair bit of appreciation for the tingly and raunchy sides to both life and music, his second solo e.p. on iD.EOLOGY is all about swelling horns and powerful thrusts. After a rapturous and exciting kick-off with some wild space-funk dub, voluptuous reggae grooves take over and head down south for a low body massage covering all tricks in the book. An exotic interplay of sensual and sophisticated salsa adds just the right pinch of spice before things finally unload and explode in a furious outburst of pure bigbeat energy.

So as the lewd entertainment on this e.p. will not only stimulate your loins and brains but also affect your hearts and souls, it will in fact be just as fulfilling and satifying as good sex. Aural sex, that is.

Weil Dub One! die prickelnden und verruchten Seiten des Lebens und der Musik zu schätzen weiß, geht es bei seiner zweiten Solo EP auf iD.EOLOGY auch voll und ganz um anschwellende Hörner und kraftvollen Druck. Nach einem stürmischen und erregenden Einstieg mit wildem Space-Funk Dub übernehmen üppige Reggae Grooves die Führung und begeben sich südwärts, um die unteren Körperregionen nach allen Regeln der Kunst zu verwöhnen. Ein exotisches Zwischenspiel mit sinnlichem und zartem Salsa fügt die richtige Prise Würze hinzu, bevor sich die Dinge engültig entladen und in einem furiosen Ausbruch aus purer Bigbeat Energie explodieren.

Da das frivole Entertainment dieser EP also nicht nur Lenden und Hirn stimuliert, sondern auch noch Herz und Seele berührt, ist es tatsächlich so erfüllend und zufriedenstellend wie guter Sex. Auraler Sex, um genau zu sein.

Cela fait maintenant 12 ans que Scott Monteith a tranquillement lancé son projet musical Deadbeat lors d’une performance modeste dans une rue devant un café de Montréal dans la cadre de la première édition du festival de la ville, désormais internationalement connu, le Mutek. Et tandis que les lieux et le public n’ont cessé de croître durant ces années, les basses grondantes, grooves profonds et sons dub crépitant qui caractérisaient cette performance sont restés une constante dans son live et son travail d’enregistrement, et lui ont fait gagné un nombre considérable d’adeptes dévoués à travers le monde.

Après avoir travaillé avec le Who’s Who virtuel des labels les plus respectés de l’industrie ces dix dernières années, Monteith fait désormais un plongeon dans les eaux troubles de la gestion de label, en lançant sa propre maison, BLKRTZ, avec ni plus ni moins que son nouvel album. Même si je pense concentrer les premières sorties sur mon propre travail, j’espère que BLKRTZ poursuivra le même objectif honorable que le label ~scape dans les années à venir.

Deabdeat nous livre ici un concept album de cinq titres longs aux rythmes dubby, fields recording, éléments analogiques, basses fréquences et instruments enregistrés. Pour célébrer cette première sortie du label, Monteith a collaboré avec son ami de longue date et artiste vidéo reconnu internationalement, Lillevan, pour créer une performance sonore et visuelle originale.

Clipped. Funked. "F*** Back". Can't Cool. Monosyllabic. Not quite sensical. Everything shorn, smoothed, streamlined into a form that narrowly resists apprehension. After so many years. People stop. They f*** back. Instruments swim along in the slipstream. Inimitable Friedman. This is the sound of a sleek new car cutting you up and leaving you way behind in a trail of anger and dust.

"This one's dedicated to the children of love... the children of God..." Abi's impassioned delivery on "Fly Your Kite" lies uncomfortably across synthetic, over-compressed beats. Dub rises to the surface on "Paternoster": vocals echo and break apart, only to return reassembled into new shapes. Funk, breakbeat, dub and now a new shape, messy and unpredictable, never knowing whether the beat will rocksteady out or break up in static...

"Gets Things Strait" lays vocals from Patrice Bart-Williams over and around the reprised melody of a Flanger track which ultimately feels like an entirely new creation. "Looks like the whole world is falling apart, a small scratch to remind you of the next track." The revisit gets revisited later in a dub version which brings everything together into a rickety, wheezing falling-apartness.

His Name Is Alive join Friedman on the eighth track "Someday My Blues Will Cover the Earth" which signals the end of the vocal element of the album. Four instrumentals bring up the rear leaving a strange impression after the expressiveness of the singers - like when a band carries on playing after their vocalist has taken a bow and left the stage.

"Consider A Bigger Wallet" is an instrumental version of "Fly Your Kite".Minus the vocals it's clear how melodic the track (and by extension the whole album) is. There's a moment when the breakbeat rhythm seamlessly eases into reggae before almost immediately returning to the plucked, strummed, echoing, horn-sectioned whole, and you realise how rich this sound is, how detailed and how effortless sounding. What seemed initially to be straightahead and smooth is revealed to be complex, detailed and a real work of art(ifice?)

Burnt Friedman appears to have put aside his penchant for shapeshifting games and jazz, but perhaps it's still lurking there deep down under the mellifluous tones and guest vocals. Can't Cool is a heavier, more richly melodic sound than his previous music.

After a long silence a voice intones, "44 degrees Centigrade in the shade". Is that Burnt Friedman lurking there in the shadows? Gone. He's a moving target tracing an unpredictable musical odyssey, impossible to nail down in one place. What will be his next missive from the other side of irony?
